Anonymous asked: I'm Canadian, and I'm not trying to discourage you from coming to Canada to study French. However, I warn you to be careful coming here to learn French. Canadian French is very very VERY different than French spoken elsewhere. I went to France for a week about a year ago, and I went with a class of French speaking Canadians & literally, they were asked to speak English because our French is so much different than theirs & the French couldn't understand them. Just something to consider is all :)

I thank you for the warning.
From personal experience, do you think that courses on a college campus (Université du Québec à Chicoutimi) would teach standard French or Canadian French? In my current classes (in the US), we’re learning formal French, so I’m hoping that on campus, they teach us standard French and, while out and about with our host families and on the town, we can pick up on some of the slang. I am a bit anxious at differentiating between Canadian French and standard French, though. I’ve thought about it briefly before but have never really given it a true thought.

If you’re ever willing to give any advice on this, I’d really appreciate it. I’m very, very excited about this and I want to do as much as I can to prepare and take the most out of the experience as I can.

(note: I’m calling it standard because I don’t want to type French French)
